- Tradition and Innovation: The cooperative model has deep roots. Members trust credit unions because of those roots. But legacy thinking and legacy systems cannot meet today’s members’ needs. The challenge is not to replace tradition, but to align it with modern expectations.
- Strength and Vulnerability: For years, strength in leadership was defined by certainty and control. Today, strength looks different. It includes transparency, self-awareness, and the willingness to say, “This isn’t working anymore.” Stankovic noted during the Collision, “Maybe what we label as weakness is actually our biggest adaptation. Maybe real strength is learning to evolve.”
- Data and Humanity: Analytics help us understand behavior. Humanity helps us understand purpose. The credit union advantage comes from blending both. Members want technology that works and people who listen. Neither alone is enough.
- Efficiency and Meaning: Automation can save time, but purpose is what builds loyalty. The tension between speed and significance is forcing leaders to rethink how they deliver value, not just services.
Turning Insight into Action
The recent UNDERGROUND Collision provided clarity, but clarity is only the beginning. Here are opportunities every credit union should consider as it prepares for the next chapter of the movement.
- Encourage Integrated Thinking. Teams that think differently should be encouraged to collaborate, not compete. Creative thinkers, analysts, technologists, and frontline staff all see the member experience from unique angles. Invite more of those perspectives into strategic conversations.
- Challenge Outdated Assumptions. Many long-standing processes exist because “they always have.” That cannot be the standard anymore. Ask where friction exists, what is slowing down the member experience, and what needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
- Modernize With Purpose. Innovation should support cooperative values, not replace them. When considering new tools, platforms, or products, evaluate not only efficiency but alignment with mission and long-term member impact.
- Strengthen Through Partnership. When credit unions share what they are learning instead of solving alone, progress accelerates. Seek collaboration outside your asset size, market, or comfort zone. Growth multiplies when knowledge is shared.
- Create Space for Real Conversations. Courageous conversations lead to meaningful change. Give leaders, employees, and partners room to voice concerns, question traditions, and offer new solutions. This builds buy-in, momentum, and a culture that supports transformation.

The credit union movement has always been strongest when it adapts to meet the needs of the people it serves. The tension we feel today is not an obstacle; it’s an opening. It signals that the industry is shifting and ready for something bigger, bolder, and more collaborative.
